Well-being Seminars

Borrowed from our friends at Longwood University CAPS, UR CAPS is excited to offer 3 Well-Being Seminars!  These seminars address universal concerns such as stress, intense emotions, adjustment concerns, and relationship issues. These seminars are scheduled throughout the semester to provide an expedited way to learn skills needed for personal and academic success.

For many students mental health and wellness concerns fall into three general areas: Improving Relationships (Interpersonal Effectiveness), Stabilizing Moods (Emotion Regulation), and Managing Stress (Distress Tolerance).

During the seminars students will be introduced to activities and worksheets to illustrate and practice each area through Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills. For many students, completing the series of Well-Being Seminars will be sufficient. For students who need more than these seminars, after completion of at least 2 pre-counseling offerings (these seminars and/or TAO modules), students will be eligible to participate in either a Skill-Building Program to further enhance their resiliency and coping skills or pursue Individual Counseling.

Individual Counseling

CAPS uses a brief individual psychotherapy model as it is effective at addressing most student concerns and allows CAPS to serve as many students as possible. On average, students are seen for 5 to 6 sessions of individual therapy.  Decisions about treatment and length of care are made collaboratively between the student and the assigned counselor.

To jumpstart the counseling process, those referred to individual counseling must first complete 2 pre-counseling offerings (Well-Being Seminars, TAO modules, or a combination of the two).  This will allow the student to learn valuable skills to manage emotional experiences and symptoms and not take away time from the individual work.

On the Road Workshops
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) will present any of our Wellness Skill-building workshops to any campus group. CAPS has created a list of Wellness Skill-building workshops that campus groups can choose from and arrange a time for their group to participate in the workshop. Please note that we need at least (2) weeks advanced notice to schedule a workshop. For more information, click here
Case Management

CAPS Case Manager offers services aimed at providing practical support and assistance with accessing mental health and other resources.

The Case Manager also offers hospital liaison services for students who have recently been psychiatrically hospitalized.  These services involve assisting students with readjustment to university life and may include developing a treatment plan, establishing follow-up care, and communicating with academic deans and residence life.

Limited Psychiatric Services
CAPS has a limited number of weekly hours of psychiatric coverage. The psychiatric providers are part-time CAPS employees.  There is NO CHARGE to students to meet with a CAPS psychiatric provider.  For more information, click here.
